retooling

I have owned the newdeep.net domain name since April 2005. Three and a half years now. And how long has there actually been a website there? Probably about 10% of that.

Well, that changes today. After being a blog aggregator, discussion board, file-hosting site, HTML test bed, ES.com redirect, nuclear power technician and 400 error, I am pleased to announce that NDDN will be my professional home for the foreseeable future. This means that my graphic art and my non-site-related written material will be going here, as well as portfolios and potential client material.

But don't worry! I'll continue to post here every other month, just like I have in the past.

Kidding.

Well, not really.

mornings, I goddamn hate you

This whole before-8 thing is gonna take some hardcore getting used to.  I've been spoiled by so many "early shifts beginning at 9:30a that getting up at a quarter of six to get ready for school is a major pain.  Even when I was at Century, my earliest class was at 9:30.  Let me tell you, the world looks a helluva lot different when the sun isn't quite up.  I do believe that I will be taking some pictures late next week

back to school

I am sitting in my Web design class right now, surrounded by Macs.  I am also largely surrounded by people who have no idea how to use one.  Which means we are going through Mac tutorials!  This should be the easiest class ever.

Coolvetica, I goddamn hate you

Helvetica the typeface was created in 1957 from sheer awesome.  In fact, it contained so much awesome that it was used on subway signs, in corporate logos, on television, in the Mac and iPod GUIs, and even on the goddamn Space Shuttle!  In 2007, to celebrate the font's 50th anniversary, Helvetica the documentary was released to attempt to explain its awesomeness.  The film opened to overwhelmingly positive reviews, and spawned a related exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art entitled "50 Years of Helvetica" that showed how one minimalist typeface was able to permeate life on this earth.  Whew.  That's a lot of responsibility for one little font.

I first became aware of Coolvetica in 2004, being used as the titles for a travesty of a TV show called Wife Swap.  I tool a look at the odd lowercase 't' and thought to myself, "That looks awful."  Then that Godawful capital G popped up and I threw up in my mouth a little.  Who would do such things to Helvetica?  That's like giving Larry King another hunchback, or making every Russian wear one of those red forehead spots like Gorbachev.  Then it started popping up more and more, being used on signage at my local mall and on covers of books.  Horrified, I did a little Googling and found that the font in question was created by Ray Larabie, the same "genius" that created ripoff homage fonts designed to ape corporate logos, like Pricedown, Crackman and Crystal Radio Kit.  Look, Larabie, I gots enough problems with awful foundry-designed fonts appearing everywhere, like Arial and such.  And the less said about Comic Sans, the better.  There is, however, one thing that Larabie did that I like: he named one of his abominations Libel Suit.  Fitting, because I think Larabie should be hit with one for calling any of these trainwrecks "fonts."

And that, Coolvetica, is why I goddamn hate you.

May day

I think this is the unofficial start of spring. Sure as hell doesn't feel like it though.

Alyssa and I finally booked our trip to New York City a couple weeks ago. It should be good times; I'm pretty excited. We have already planned quite a few things to do during that span. It also gives me a chance to test out my camera in a tourist setting rather than just family functions and city randomness. If any of you guys have any ideas though for us, please let me know.

Concert Review: Sara Bareilles with Rachael Yamagata

Fine Line Music Café, April 15, 2008

I know, I know, it seems like I'm always at the Fine Line. Shut up.

Tax Day 2008 turned out to be very pleasant weather-wise. Mostly sunny skies and temperatures hovering around 60. This is why there was a tinge of regret in my soul as we headed downtown to catch an early show featuring the rising Sara Bareilles. But all was well, because we grabbed sone Panchero's beforehand and ate while waiting outside for the doors to open.

Six o'clock, and the opener comes out. I've had pretty awful luck with opening acts since the Mandy Moore show back in like September, and tonight was no different: an atrocious chick-quartet called Raining Jane came out and channeled the Indigo Girls, dashing my hope of them being a Saving Jane clone. We suffered through about six of their songs; the highlights of their set were 1) a cello solo, 2) the surprise reveal that Rachael Yamagata was on the bill, and 3) when they left the stage. Oh, and in case you wanted to hear what the dumpy girls who didn't get asked to prom have been doing since you graduated high school, check out their album!

One bad thing about early weekday shows is that every act feels crammed in and constrained. Rachael came out about 15 minutes after the lesbians had torn down their equipment and wasted no time getting underway. She has a new record due soon, and is apparently using this tour as a vehicle for trying some of her new material out. Her performance was good but unremarkabkle, but was highlighted by an a cappella song that managed to silence even the activity in the smoking alley adjacent to the building.

Shortly before 8:00, Sara Bareilles came out. Touring in support of her major-label debut, Little Voice, she also had new material to show off. Honestly, I went into the concert expecting a Colbie Cailat-style experience, with unenthusiastic, by-the-book performances that were essentially the album played live, but Bareilles proved to be much more than that. She was engaging, had non-album stuff to play, and actually seemed to enjoy playing and mixing it up a bit. The last two songs she played were "Love Song" and, as an encore, a tune by Bonnie Raitt, and finished just a shade before nine.

Overall, the Bareilles/Yamagata show was a good time. One thing I didn't enjoy was one of the things that bugged me about the Cailat show: the crowd. Listen, I know it's an all-ages show, but really, if you have no idea how to act at a show, go to a free one to learn or stay the fuck home. And if you act like an ass at a show, don't get pissed if I mock you.

it's spring!

... or at least that's what the calendar says.

I swear, sometimes spring in Minnesota feels like karmic retribution for the awesome summer and autumn we usually get. Or maybe I've just been spoiled by the past few springs. Every day, when I log on to weather.com, I'm greeted by the same dismal forecast: clouds and a high of 40° with a chance of snow showers. Then, I click on the ten day forecast and see the high bounce between like 35 and 41 for the rest of the week. When does this shit stop? Alls I want is a chance to not have to wear my pea coat everywhere, and maybe break out the flip flops. Doesn't seem like too much to ask.

In site-related news, I am trying to tweak things in the design to allow my recently-created Twitter account to have a place on the page. You know, right below the "about me" box. And another thing: you may have noticed a Google AdSense box on my page. That's not a mistake; I'm seeing if there is money to be made here. I'm also going to be putting in direct links to the iTunes Music Store where I log my currently playing song. So, if you approve of the website and would like to help me out a bit, think about clicking through here before buying stuff from the iTMS.

Thanks, dudes.

Your pal,
Ehren

now this is what winter is supposed to look like

We got some winter finally, dudes. Ever since I started seriosuly blogging on ES.com back in 2004, and even before that, I have bitched at length about the pussified winters we have had of late. This year though, even with the snow being late to arrive. the chilly teps set in early enough to get the ground frozen and allow any snow we do get to stick around. You know, like the six or so inches we got this past weekend and the three more due to us today and tonight.

Why am I so gung-ho about winter? I'm glad you asked: I'm driven by the need for a Norman Rockwell Christmas setting and that is something that has been seriously lacking here the past few years, especially with the way it has been secularized. Now, I'm not about to go all Bill O'Reilly war-on-Christmas on you, because that's just nonsense, as well as ignorant. But it is nice to go into a store or a mall now, and see and hear "Merry Christmas" alongside "Happy Holidays" as well as hearing songs about Christ's birth instead of just Santa and commercialism.

One favor, guys: remind me of this post on like four months when I get sick of snow and cold. Kay, thanks.

Black Friday, I goddamn hate you

fuck you I love the Christmas season, but not the hours associated with it. Thankfully, the worst is over; I put in fourteen hours on Black Friday and about ten on Saturday. I've done this for ten years now, so it is mostly routine, but one thing that never fails to amaze me every year is the volume of people who are willing to sit in the cold for hours on end just to save a few extra bucks on that television or other item they had their eyes on all year.

Now I'm no anti-consumerist; hell, I definitely own more than my fair share of shit, especially in electronics and DVDs. I even like to save money, so I look for deals whenever I can. But really, even 8 am on the day after Thanksgiving is a little early for me to think about buying Christmas gifts for people, let alone anything for myself. We opened at 5, and even then we weren't the first; Kohl's was open at 4 and Eden Prairie Center opened at fucking one o'clock in the morning. Outrageous. If there is any silver lining in this madness, these are the things that come to mind first: the extended hours I am required to work will 1) allow me extra funds for Christmas gifts and 2) allow me to watch Law and Order: SVU without the interruption of going home and cueing up the TiVo to the proper spot. Until then though, my free time will be in short supply (sorry, Alyssa) and I may be cranky during those times (sorry, everyone else).

Despite all this though, I still love Christmas. Preemptive happy holidays, everyone.

Concert Review: Pat McGee Band with The Kin

Fine Line Music Café, October 7, 2007

I think that by now I've seen the Pat McGee Band somewhere around four billion times. The greatest thing though is that it's never the same show.

PMB has toured semi-nationally since signing to Warner Bros Records in 2000, and this tour with co-headliner Josh Kelley and support act The Kin marked their eighth headlining visit to the Twin Cities, third gig at the Fine Line and the first since the untimely passing of drummer Chris Williams.

Due to a previous commitment (supposedly a gig singing at a friend's wedding) Kelley was unable to make it to the Cities, so The Kin were moved to the middle of the lineup and opening duties were awarded to local nu-funk specialists Roster McCabe who performed quite admirably. We arrived halfway through their set but were able to catch the impressive "See You Soon" and see this energetic sextet jam with abandon, setting the tone for the night as a free-for-all talent showcase.

McGee and the boys, with Chris Bashista on drums, hit the stage shortly after 9:30, leading off with "Guess We Were" from the new album These Days and diving into a pleasant mix of new material, older songs from the Revel/Shine era and the usual spate of covers. Most songs, with the exception of a couple of tracks from Save Me, received the extended treatment, with The Kind and parts of Kelley's band joining PMB on stage, notably for "Lost" and "Girl from Athens." Brian Fechino also had a chance to show off his chops, with some pretty sick riffs on "Elizabeth" and "Maybe It's Time." The band ended their incredible 100-minute set with a pretty stellar cover of Jackson Browne's "Runnin' On Empty," employing the six PMB'ers, the three members of The Kin and the four players from Kelley's band.

I've been to a lot of shows, and I've seen a lot of dudes perform. No matter how many times I go to a Pat McGee Band show though, I always find something new that makes me think, "Man, that really blew me away." I don't know if it's the same on the East Coast, where the band is much more popular, but I think the small but dedicated crowds here in the Cities really help to bring out the best in them. And that's why I will continue to see them. A

PS: The Kin, as a standalone act, blew a goat. That is all.

Concert Review: Mandy Moore and Ben Lee

Fine Line Music Café, September 27, 2007

Mandy MooreI've been to a few live shows in my day. I had never been to one put on by a former pop princess though, and I'm not used to entering a venue before 6:00 on a weeknight. But there were a couple of extenuating circumstances here: first, I am a Mandy Moore devotee, and secondly I haven't yet seen a show at the Fine Line that disappointed me. Luckily, the fan in me won out over reason, and I made it out to see the show.

The official support act for the Midwest spate of shows was Ben Lee, a Twin Cities fave who will be headlining at the Varsity in mid-November. Equipped with only a tiny acoustic guitar and a keyboard player, he proceeded to wow the eclectic all-ages crowd with a mix of tunes from his new album Ripe and standards from his back catalog. Specific winners in his set were the light, whimsical "American Television," the frank "Sex Without Love" and his biggest U.S. hit "Catch My Disease."

Mandy appeared on stage for her set shortly before 8:00 and jumped right into "Slummin' in Paradise," wasting no time in getting into the music:

.... and so the set continued. The short-by-my-standards 50-minute set was made up mostly of songs from her new album Wild Hope, though she mixed in a couple of covers (the buzzed-about sendup of Rihanna's "Umbrella" and Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow" which she recorded for Coverage) and closed her set with the bubblegum anthem "Candy."

Overall, I was impressed with the show, though the forgettable Chris Stills could have easily been left off the bill, and while Mandy's set was short, the bonus of 45 minutes of Ben Lee made this show worth the price of admission. B+

Hi, I'm Norm and this is the fake news

Yeah I know, I haven't been keeping up.  Shut it already.  Reviews will be coming shortly for them concerts like I promised, and I am pleased to announce the return of properly capitalized sentences.

I started my Christmas shopping already. I'm proud of myself.  One thing I did notice tonight though is I still hate crowds dead.  The one thing that pisses me off most about crowds? All these self important parents who insist on putting one tiny toddler in a huge-ass stroller suitably equipped for a week-long excursion to the Australian Outback.  Guys, this isn't rocket science. There's only so much floor space available, and your Jeep-branded stroller with the beverage compartment, 12 inch nubbed off-road tires and iPod dock is not helping matters one bit.  Three words: not fucking necessary.  Please, I implore you, get these shits out of my stores posthaste.

I also re-upped with Verizon today. (God bless modern utilities commerce, where signing up for service is akin to enlisting in the National Guard.)  I've been on Verizon's towers since 2001, and hadn't had a single issue with them until this week.  Monday, I paid my bill online as usual and noticed that I was eligible for a phone upgrade, which couldn't come at a better time since my RAZR V3c has started shitting all over itself.  For a while I really grappled with the iPhone thing, but in the end I decided I'd rather have awesome service with a decent phone than an awesome phone with the worst service ever.  Finally I decided on LG's apparently-fantastic VX 8700, and after I couldn't complete the transaction online I headed to a Verizon store.  After about 45 minutes and a few calls to *611, I got everythign resolved, though not in an ideal fashion: I ended up using a demo laptop to complete my Web based order instead of getting an activated phone to take home with me. I should get it Monday or Tuesday. I hope it comes by then, anyway.

I have nothing more to report.

hi! (again)

I've been laying pretty low of late, internetwise; there's been a ton of stuff going on.

here is a list of stuff I'm working on for the site, to hopefully be completed before May 21:
  • slight facelift of the site, and migration to Movable Type software
  • Flickr integration for a future themed photoblog based on this book
  • a weekly podcast downloadable from the site, or a weekly vlog posted to YouTube
  • other stuff, as I get inspired
I hope this proves to you that I still think about this place. ROCK ON

hi

OH MY GOD EHREN POSTED TO HIS WEBSITE

no I haven't forgotten this site, though it seems like it. I've just been busy with you know, life. it's been blowing up lately and for the first time in quite awhile I feel like I'm in just this awesome place where everything seems to be coming together, and I'm trying to not do a lot to disrupt that flow. except... Blogger sortof did that for me by making me sign in to extra shits to access my content. but hey, that is the way the mop flops. I'm gonna try to start posting on a weekly basis from here on out, because while my old pre-laziness pace wasn't exactly frenetic, it was enough to make this whole website thing feel like a chore, and I really really don't want that to happen again. so stay close, keep on clickin' and I'll do the best damn job I can to entertain everyone out there.

Happy New Year, guys.

another case for selective castration

Minneapolis mother jailed for leaving son, 5, in hot car (Star Tribune)

so this woman wants to go out and celebrate her birthday with her friends, but can't find a babysitter. of course the logical thing to do is leave your preschool age child in a car with a glass of water for hours on end on one of the hottest days in recent memory while you go get sloshed in a hick dive. this also means that she'd drive home, and my money's against her being responsible with her drinking so she won't be impaired by alcohol on the way home. BRILLIANT

I should probably put something new up here

wow, it's been a while.. sorry. well, I've been pretty busy but at the same time not a lot has happened. the big plans I had for last weekend never really came to fruition so I pretty much just sat around. um, I also finally went to a Twins game today. it's really interesting that they can have an awesome outing one night, then the next day when I actually decide to attend a game, they get their asses handed to them on a big silver platter carried by one CC Sabathia. thanks a lot, you fucks.

I've also been spending a lot of time helping the Followers gear up for the '06 tour, which I am super excited about. there's also a decent amount of trepidation there, but then that's kinda par for the course when you're dealing with a horde of mostly unruly teenagers. I feel bad for poor Rob, who's probably gonna have a full head of gray hair by the end of the tour, and he may just spontaneously combust from the stress level. either way, I'm gonna be entertained.

THE BALL PARK IS FIINALLY BEING BUILT I'm gonna just start doing all my shopping and eating in Hennepin County. because that will, unless my years of construction wisdom fail me, heighten the construction pace to almost human levels to enable the first game to be played next Thursday rather than 2010. I mean, my god, I'll be like 206 30 by then. I CAN'T WAIT.

I saw this article at Yahoo! today. that's good research right there. oh and also? what's the deal with Yahoo! rolling out this new front page, and not building in compatibility with Safari? I mean, it's only the most used Mac browser out there. and the lack of video content compatibility also angers me. I mean, one would think you'd wanna build in support for the OS choice of affluent gay creative professionals.

I'm done, totally tired. plus I think I have another vomit inducing headache coming on. later!

musings

I went to Thief River Falls over the weekend to witness my awesome sister play a fifty page work by Tchaikovsky from memory on the piano. however, I came away from my trip with more than just a renewed appreciation for baroque-era classical pieces:

1) TRF is very similar in civic structure to the fictional Tree Hill, NC. there is an extreme high-end upscale contigent, represented in part by the recital I went to in which one of the pianists has already cut a CD and been commissioned to write a play, and a Lucas Scott-inspired 'wrong side of the tracks' that is littered with dirty dirty industry and crappy pressboard houses. of course, as with any rural Midwest town, the epitome of trashiness can be found at the Pamida. I can say, without question, that the Thief River Pamida is the dirtiest, most run-down, and least organized store I have ever seen. I'm pretty sure I caught herpes while in the health section, which lacks an operating pharmacy but curiously has not been retooled to reflect that.

2) 90 minutes of listening to piano is not quite as fun as it sounds. the Knuttila Studio, which staged the recital, is run by a woman who is unfailingly nice but also clearly nuts. she has a quirk when speaking to a gathering of people in which she refers to everyone as 'audience' repeatedly. as in, 'Audience, this is the first blah blah...' forcing me to supress the urge to loudly respond 'That's great, performer.' I fucking hate when people do things like that. if you can't address someone by name, you shouldn't address them directly at all, because it just sounds like you're trying to assert a higher standing over another person. it's like at work; one of my responsibilities is to perform stock checks. almost without exception, the sales staff will get on the horn and be like 'hey warehouse, blah blah blah...' and I reply by calling them 'sales'. doesn't seem to faze them though. once a while, I'll get this exchange:

caller: warehouse?
me: sales?
caller: I'm not sales, I'm MANAGEMENT.
whoops! my mistake, Princess.

3) Twins stadium deal is close to going through. FINALLY. after all that hoopla with the tax committee, the ballpark bill passed through the last House committee last night on its way to the main House and Senate floor and, hopefully, to construction later this year. I really do hope this all happens.

4) about 12-14 years ago, my grandparents went to DC and Virginia on vacation, and on their return gave me a souvenir copy of the Declaration of Independence and a map detailing the Battle of Gettysburg. they were muy cool because they had that fake antique parchment feel to them. also, for the past three months or so, I've been doing an energy drink about two hours before my shift at work ends so I don't crash. this is pretty much essential when constantly running on two hours' sleep. anyhoo, I usually get Mountain Dew Amp, but since they discontinued it in favor of MDX, I switched the more readily available Red Bull. so here's how these two events tie together: to achieve the antique parchment look, my souvenirs had to be soaked in a smelly acid concoction that still permeates those papers to this day. well, my Red Bull today tasted JUST LIKE HOW THEY SMELLED. quite disgusting, and I almost vomited. ahh, teh goodtimes.

that's all for now. later, CHUMPS!

w00t for consumerism

so, the other day I sold my old iPod photo 40GB to finance the purchase of a spankin' new 60GB iPod with video (aptly named mandyPod with video). and yes, I know I crapped all over the idea of the videopod as recently as a few months ago. so I sold out... what of it? anyhoo, due to this upgrade in gadgetry, I started looking into videos to add to my music collection. and after downloading Podner and HandBrake I have a few movies, music videos, and Simpsons and South Park eipisodes on the pod. however, there is one thing missing: the video version of the Pat McGee Band's 'Must Have Been Love.'

Sunday, March 5, 2006

so I'm sufficiently drunk for the second night in a row. I should probably have that looked into. but for now, since I haven't updated in the longest and I'm in a state where I don't really care what I say, here are some bullet points for the day:

I finally got my RAZR V3c. 'twas about time, since the Samsung keeps taking periodic dunps on me. I love it except for the fact that Verizon decided to disable OBEX profiles for some inane reason, and I had to enter all my phonebook info in maually. this was a drag, which also led to...

unfortunate drunkdials that I already regret I called two people having a good time because my over-neediness and insecurity compelled me to call them and see if I could somehow join the good time. I also called a couple other random people, and left a rather incriminating voicemail at one number. hopefully, she'll just delete that one and forget that I ever called her.

I also experienced a downswing in traffic due to a preventable server outage. who knew that hosting bills needed to be paid periodically? well, I did, but I forgot to update my card info when I got my new checkcard. whoops! my bad... it's not like I've had anything of significance to post because I'm busy working on...

the OS X Browser War! yeah this asinine idea continues to eat up my time. I'm currently spending most of my time this week browsing teh internets with Camino, though this post was written in Firefox to ensure compatibility. hopefully by the end of the century, I'll have something meaningful to file in regards to my browser report.

THE TWINS ARE IN SEASON AGAIN yay for baseball! Torii Hunter homered on the first spring pitch he saw, and Lew Ford and Joe Mauer chipped in with their own solo shots to power the Twins into a 6-3 victory over the Beantowns. I know it's super early still, but hey, spring training rules the roost.

the last two things I'll mentions are: I know I've neglected the site, yet again, but I do promise to do better in the spring months, and the RAZR's megapixel camera should make it easier to post to the photoblog that hasn't been touched in eight months. also, I've been crushing on this one chick for a while, but I think it's pretty obvious to everyone that knows the situation that nothing is gonna happen. so I decided this afternoon that I'm gonna let it drop and move on. I've pretty much known that I should have done this like a month ago, but it's better late than never in my opinion.

see you in the morning, after I sober up!

yay!

so yesterday, the Quest reopened. you know what that means: the PMB show booked for the 25th at the Ascot is finally a sure thing. I was worried for a while there, because the Entry, Fineline, and 3 Degrees were all booked for that night, so there would be no place to move the show to if it did get shut out. so big sigh of relief there.

also finally saw 'Waiting...' tonight. pretty humorous. but why, in every comedy now, does there have to be some poor schmuck that reminds me of me? this fact was overshadowed by Ryan Reynolds, who is fast becoming one of my favorite actors. outside of Mandy Moore of course!

I turn 26 in like, a week and a half. and the countdown begins...

graphic observations*

*graphic as in, I show you pictures and comment on them, not that I show you nasty shit ad wait for a reaction

so, now that I'm finished with my painting project, here are a couple of things that have been in the back of my head this week:

1) Halliburton went to my website for some reason. here's the proof:

now what does this mean, exactly? I'm not exactly sure. but if the government or its contracted cronies in the private sector are sniffing around, that gives me some cause for worry. but then, if they're using IE6 on Windows, maybe I shouldn't worry quite so much.

2) Matt McConaughey movies are now so generic that they don't even bother using unique posters. cookie-cutter rocoms now apparently equal cookie-cutter posters. check out the callout posters for 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' (2003) and 'Failure to Launch' (2005) and tell me there aren't crazy similarities. just for added measure though, here they are, side by side:

so sad :( but hey, at least the 'Failure' poster team fixed all the random baseline problems in the '10 Days' poster.

3) stop redesigning your site, ESPN seriously. up there with Page3, 'Cold Pizza' and Stephen A. Smith, the biennial redesign of ESPN.com has got to be one of the worst ideas Disney has come up with. example: I loved the design they took on just after 2001, and grew very attached to it. here is a screenshot showing that wonderful design (Twins picture intentional):

see? simple yet bold, and effective, with minimal use of Flash graphics. FLAWLESS. but of course, like the late-90s SportsCenter, that means it wasn't destined to last. cue the pug-fugly, Flash-overloaded designs of 2004 and 2006, respectively:

big ups on them for using the Helvetica typeface in the latest incarnation. but guys, please don't capitalize 'the' anymore. it makes my penis sad.

that's it for now. actual insight to come to the site over the weekend

TUESDAY

hi everyone! man, I gotta stay on top of this updating thing.

so this past weekend I got to hang out with Pat and Elena. 'twas teh goodtimes, as always. watched some flicks, ate too much, and drank. a lot. we decided it'd be a fantastic idea to head over to the Hard Rock Cafe' again, but the wait was slightly longer for this go around. by which I mean, we waited for like an hour to get in as opposed to sitting down right away like last time. oh well... the food there is good and the drinks there are extremely tasty, and the atmosphere is lively if not crazy loud. the only down point is I don't remember too much of Saturday night, when apparently Elena confiscated my phone and my amaretto. :-/ oh, also I woke up Sunday feeling like I had been hit by a truck. most likely the drunkest I've been in a while.

the weekend was a much needed release though from the past couple of weeks. things have been pretty stressful at work and with my random personal drama, and lately I feel like I disappoint almost everyone I come in contact with. hopefully I'll get over that soon though. I do need to finally finish up my room project though, because we're having some form of shindig here at the house for Emman that my personal sensei Leo Bickelhaupt is supposed to attend. I haven't seen that fucker for many years, and I look forward to catching up with him. I also somehow got roped into having a Super Bowl party. I wasn't planning on having one this year, instead looking forward to just kicking back and watching Jerome Bettis have that last brief moment in the sun, but enough people have asked about it to make it happen.

PAT McGEE is headed back to town!! February 25th, to be exact, only five days after yours truly's birthday. I'm so looking forward to checking out the set, since the last time out he toured in support of hanson and we only got a 40 minute set in which 'Beautiful Ways' and 'Fine' were omitted. boo! but since he's the headliner in this go-round, we're sure to get a full 90+ set. CAN'T WAIT. I also hate waiting for packages from Amazon which is why I'm happy to be in the Amazon Prime trial program. their end works beautifully: for a flat yearly rate, you get free two-day UPS on every fucking thing you order from them. so far, Amazon has fulfilled on that. the bad link in this chain just happens to UPS. I have yet to get one of my Prime orders in two days due to their random snafus like claiming my house didn't exist and shipping a book from Portland Oregon to Kentucky before it got to my house. oh well. I still get the low low Amazon price on media plus I get to dodge the ol' sales tax. life is good!

I think that's about it for now. a couple of short thoughts before I hit 'publish' though: 1) I love Front Row. 2) One Tree Hill is crazy addictive. 3) I can't wait for the baseball season.

OUT.

...have something big that you wanted to do, and you build it up in your mind forever, and come up with several options, and then say to yourself, "There is no way I can fail. I'm gonna do this!" and then all of a sudden, when the time comes, you're suddenly not sure if it's such a hot idea? and then you get scared, and start ticking off all the negative effects possible, to the point where you wish you never came up with the idea in the first place?

well folks, that's where I'm at right now. so I'm asking for your help: go to the comments section, tell your success stories, or failures that weren't so crushing, and inspire me.

sick. AGAIN.

I swear to God, this year I've been sick more often than I have in the past four years combined. right now, I'm battling another bad cold that I just cannot seem to kick, and of course my sleeping pattern is all screwy besides. the worst part about being up at 3:15a? well besides the fact that I have a combined four hours of sleep in the past three nights. I'll tell you: there's nothing to do. I think I actually saw all the internet has to offer tonight, and I'm still bored out of my mind. so, because of this ordeal, I'm asking a favor of all youse out there... please be up at all hours of the night, so you can entertain me when I'm sick.

happy new year!

I feel really bad about neglecting the site, I really do. but I've been super busy with the Thanksgiving, and the Christmas, and the new year, and work, and... sleeping, I guess.

what have I been up to, you ask? well I'm glad you asked, my busty friend. tonight I finished the fun fun task of compiling all of my random address books and my phone and Palm Desktop contacts into Apple Address Book. yeah, it was as boring as it sounds :( also, I'm STILL working on the room project that I started like, 36 years ago. so that's taking up some time. besides that, I found out that my grandpa on my dad's side somehow learned to use Yahoo! Search, so he's been visiting the website somewhat frequently. but hey, at least that accounts for the hits I get from WebTV users. other than that, I've been much too fucking busy to find things on the internet that amuse me, or come up with random musings that make my mind actually like, work occasionally.

oh hey, it's a new year! you know what that means? RESOLUTION TIME
  1. I resolve to lose more weight. you know, just like about 95% of the United States. but I actually have a nice base to work on, due to my losing 25 pounds in the past six months. my revised target is 195, 25 more pounds, and I'd like to see that accomplished by April or May.
  2. I also resolve to be better with my money! anyone who knows me knows how atrocious I am with impulse spending, particularly DVD movies and clothes. so I'm making a budget out tomorrow afternoon after my Home Depot run, and by God I'm sticking to it.
  3. I also need to make sure I go back to school. unfortunately, it doesn't look like spring is the time. hopefully I can get some summer classes under my belt and be ready for August.
  4. finally (and this is the longshot) I want to be in a good relationship with a female before spring arrives. I have a few possibilities in my mind, and just about anyone who knows me knows where I'm coming from.
well, that's it for tonight. except... I want to say a quick thanks to everyone who reads the random shit I post, especially all the people who started visiting in the past year. ES.com has seen a surge in visitors in the later months of 2005. a hundred unique hits a week is a far cry from the traffic seen by other personal sites like The Sneeze or Batgirl, but it's a phenomenal success in my eyes.

I hope all of you have a 2006 that's truly awesomesauce. thanks again for all of your support.

hi, I haven't been here in a while

man I missed this place. sorry about not updating but I have been ridiculous busy with work and other things, especially gettng ready for Christmas. speaking of which, why does the Christmas shopping always feel like a chore? is it the inane people in the crowds, or the time constraints? I mean, normally I like shopping and all but shopping for the holiday is a helluva different ballgame. and for some reason I enjoy it a little less each year. last year I chalked it up to the fact that I did all of it in a 15 hour cram session with funds I didn't really have, but this year I started right after Thanksgiving to spread it out, and I still don't enjoy it all that much. oh well, it's the crowds. YEAH THAT'S THE TICKET

also, work is insane busy right now, which I guess isn't a total shocker considering I work in retail. that doesn't make it suck any less though. plus lately I've been feeling ridiculous useless at work and I don't really know why. hopefully that one will iron itself out once January hits.

<3 google

so about two weeks ago, it snowed for the first time here this winter. ecstatic because I wouldn't have to suffer through another brown Christmas, I posted a lyric snippet by the fictional Billy Mack from one of my favorite movies, 'Love Actually'. (I realize now that I butchered them, but I don't really care enough to correct them.) apparently one of the spiders at Google found it last week, and like a bad YTMND fad Google referrals relating to the post kept popping up: (I blurred out the actual IP's because I'm nice like that.)

that's just a sampling. over the past week or so, about forty people arrived at my site via searches for 'Christmas is All Around'. they weren't all U.S. visitors either; I got referrals from Italy and uh, the Phillipines. so apparently the movie is there too and uh, I learned something today.

...

well, I thought it was amusing, dammit!

spam, you have a new enemy

in the mornings, I have a set routine. the last thing I usually do everyday before leaving the house is sign onto Yahoo! to check my mails. well, this morning there was a little surprise waiting for me:

I was a bit surprised. I mean, I know I'm popular and all, but shit... 4000 emails? I'm not Strong Bad over here. so I open up my inbox, and discover that some creative e-thug has sent out tons of spam emails advertising a 'Canaddian' (sic) pharmacy using addresses such as r2xqmy@ES.com, and since I have my email set to catch mail sent to invalid addresses, I received hundreds upon hundreds of bounce messages from people rejecting 'my' spam. so I cleared out my inbox and spam folder, and shortly before 11a went to work.

fast forward to like, 20 minutes ago: I get home and check my mails. I am then greeted with another surprise:

this in the space of six hours, folks. so I clean out my inboxes, again, then go ahead with changing my settings to make another address my catchall address. the point? not sure. I just really hate spam.

thanks for giving me nightmares, Strib

anyone who knows me well knows I'm horrible at dealing with things that relate to death. especially when it comes to cemeteries and funeral homes. one thing that frightens me to no end is the exhumation of buried coffins and the remains in them. I honestly had no idea of this concept until about ten years ago, when I read a book about my church's history and found out that one of the previous buildings had a small graveyard next to it, and when encroaching downtown development threatened the church, they de-interred the existing caskets and moved them to Oakland Cemetery. the idea of this completely scared and disgusted me; the image of vaults being moved on flatbed trucks through the city stayed in my head for a long time. then, me being me, I just like forgot all about it.

fast forward to today: I click over to the Star Tribune website for the day's news and I find out that there's an investigation on in central Minnesota regarding a fifty-year-old death case. not only that, but they include a photo on the front page. not a file photo of the victim in question, but of a burial vault being lifted out of the ground:

good lord, Strib! warn a brotha'. if this isn't a totally morbid picture to look at, I don't know what is.

stuff plus things

I discovered today that my website is now blocked by my employer's surf control filter. I believe that for non-specified sites, the filter is bandwidth-triggered, so thanks everyone at work for driving up my traffic so much that I can't see my own site.

also, today I got the dubious honor of hearing the new single fron Maroon5 Train. oh man, what happened to this group? I realize that these guys are no Beatles, or even Pat McGee Band, but fuck they sure got mediocre fast. that 'Calling All Angels' song was old almost upon release and this new one called 'Riding on a Butterfly' or something equally retarded sounds like something that Jack Johnson or Jason Mraz wrote in a drunken stupor then discarded. it kinda makes one nostalgic for 2000, when this group's presence was still somewhat fresh and not at all bothersome.

I was taking a short nap just now, due to my cold, but it cut short by a terrible dream I just had.

I'm at my house, and for some reason my mom and grandparents are in the kitchen, and the first thing I do when I get up there is get into a screaming match with my mom. I don't remember what set it off even. so anyhoo, I take a short walk outside and I find Austin and some of the neighborhood kids playing in a hilly field behind our house. so I start playing with Austin and we were having so much fun that we didn't care that it had started to rain. then some dude in a heavy duty truck decides he wants to go mudding, and I see out of the corner of my eye this huge truck skidding in a big patch of mud, turning right for Austin and the crowd of kids. I yell 'Look out!' at the crowd and they scatter, but the truck still gets Austin and flings him fron the corner of the bumper into the base of a nearby tree, then speeds off. I run to him, calling his name, but when I get to him the only response is him weakly raising his hand to meet mine. I reach for my phone to call 911, but it isn't in my pocket, so I pick up my poor little brother in my arms and carry him back to my house, all the while yelling for help.

I wish I knew if this dream meant anything.

wheee

it's Wednesday. or I guess Thursday now. this is also the longest I've gone without my own computer since like 2001. it's getting kinda brutal; I never thought I'd miss Trillian or Photoshop as much as I do. I hope to put an end to this madness in about a week, and at the same time, not having the compy to distract me when I should be doing other things is kinda nice.

I began my drywalling project yesterday. unfortunately I am also coming down with some sort of cold, which is gonna make the sanding extra fun. oh well, I'm enjoying doing it and showing people that I do actually posess some guy qualities. hopefully I'll be done with all the drywall and wallpaper stripping by the end of next week so I can begin painting.

why is shit so expensive

so the past couple weeks I've been toying with the idea of getting professional photos done. mostly because my graduation pictures sucked ass, and other than that I haven't had a 'good' portrait since I was like 3. then, like magic or some crap, I get the church newsletter and it says that they're trying to put together a pictodirectory this November, which is awesomesauce because that means no sitting fees. I still have to buy portraits though, which even without sitting fees will probably run me like a hundred dollars. I also realized last week that I don't own a suit. so that's another 300 dollars, at the very least. :( why? so I can keep up with the Joneses. damn my materialistic tendencies

Sunday morning and it's time to go
Been raining all night so everybody knows
Over to the field for tackle football
Big hits, big hats, yeah give me the ball
Rain is pouring, touchdown scoring
Keep on rolling, never boring
Karma, karma, karma chameleon
We're talking kinda funny from helium

We used to laugh a lot
But only because we thought
That everything good always would remain
Nothing's gonna change; there's no need to complain

-- Jack Johnson, 'Mudfootball'

this lyric is pretty easy to get your head around, as just about everyone can relate to it. it preaches about treasuring the good times you have because they certainly will not last forever. I thought about this today at work; when I was in middle and high school, every fall brought on a new year filled with friends, fun and free time. I had a wonderful core of close friends from my church, and one of our favorite fall activities every Sunday was to play some football on the church lawn. our weekly football games were so big that we started giving names to special games: the Advent Bowl was played after the annual Christmas caroling trip, New Year's Bowl at the rotating New Years Eve party, the Super Bowl Bowl, which went down during the real SB's halftime show, and of course the Thanksgiving Bowl that we had every turkey day at the rotating dessert party. we even used to get together after rainy nights to play tackle football, like the song says, and one year when the street next to the Arby's we always went to was torn up, we'd play there too while we waited for our parents to finish eating. every spring though, someone would graduate from high school and go off to college, and there would be one less guy on the field. by my senior year in high school, we played only sporadically, and now the only game we play is the Thanksgiving Bowl, which is now 15 years old. out of all the things I miss from my high school years, the football is what I miss most. the experience of running in the TD, stripping down to short sleeves and gloves in the coldest weather, breathing the crisp autumn air as you stared down your buddy from across the scrimmage line, and just the feeling of spending a cool Sunday afternoon with your friends. I may never get to do that again, but whenever I see the leaves start to turn and I smell the air, it's almost like I'm back on that lawn. and I wouldn't trade that feeling for the world.

hi!

so, my sleep sched is still way screwed. let's see what's in the news today

the Twins found a new way to lose today. playing the Rangers, the Twins dug themselves into a nice hole early as Lohse got tagged for 5 runs on a grand slam and a solo shot in just two innings of work. the boys battled back though, and at the top of 9, the good guys (by which I mean the Twins, not the store) had the lead, 7-6. unfortunately the usually reliable Joe Nathan unraveled and after a Texiera moon shot the Twins lost 10-6. sigh...

autumn is here. I think. the leaves are changing pretty quickly around here, but the temps don't want to seem to cooperate. it was 73 here today, but it was in the high 80's over the past weekend and mid 80's are expected to make a return appearance this week. I really wish autumn would just hurry the fuck up and come, seeing as it's my favorite season and all, and hopefully the massive cooldown happening next week will be the start of it. ot's around 60 right now, if anybody cares. because I sure do!

your mom called. she asked me to tell you that YOU SUCK

there are just waaaaay too many sweet DVD's coming out in the next couple months. it starts next week with Fever Pitch and continues with new Family Guy sets, the third season of 'That 70's Show' and that other movie that was released to an assload of fanfare at the beginning of the summer. so that should be super awesome. have a love affair with buying DVD's; I need to be STOPPED

PMB is coming back to the Twin Cities as the show opener for uh, Hanson. I still plan to be there, mostly for the hot underage trim.* it's at the Quest too, which is an automatic strike against the show.

got the new Josh Kelley last week titled Almost Honest. it's pretty dec, but the guy at AllMusic nailed it when he said Mayer comparisons would dog Kelley wherever he went. if you took Mayer's Heavier Things and his forthcoming blues album and combined them, you might get something closely resembling Honest. not to say that's bad, because it's a good record, but it's not too original. oh well, at least Kelley learned to stray from the basic versechorusversechorusbridgechorus formula for songwriting.

I think that's it. now, let's see how I do with going to sleep.

happy September, bitches.

well, I was gonna go to the fair today. but instead of that happening, I spent most of my day in and in transit to doctor's offices. curious about the events? let's BREAK IT DOWN

11:03a after being awake and in unbearable pain till 6:30a, I finally fell asleep only to be awakened by the same nauseating aches in my right foot. I decide to call a doctor.

11:46a I get off the phone with MinnHealth. my appointment at 1:45p confirmed, I decide to start getting ready.

12:32p ahh, a nice hot shower. but wait, my foot is in even worse pain now. I look down and my cuticle is hemorrhaging blood. ohhh fuck, this could be BAD.

1:45p at the MinnHealth, the orderly looks with disdain at my homemade dressing. the gauze was a deep red, and in real danger of coming off. the doctor comes in, looks at my toe, writes out two prescriptions, and tells me to get the fuck out of his office and call a podiatrist, pronto.

2:18p I'm at Cub Foods. waiting in line. I just want to fill my prescriptions. for some reason, people love to gawk at some poor fuck wearing beat up sport sandals with his big toe wrapped in bandages. gah, just get me out of here! finally, I got my codeine and antibiotics and jetted like a motherfucker.

2:40p I walk in the door of my house, pick up the phone, and dial the number of the podiatry clinic I was referred to. I ask for an appointment for Friday, only to be told there were no openings till the following Thursday. I politely tell the woman that my doctor said my need was urgent. her reply? 'We can fit you in now. Hurry, the specialist leaves at 4p.'

3:12p I limped my sorry ass in the specialist's office. a cool guy, we made iPod-centered small talk as he prepped me, and while waiting for the anesthetic to go into effect he told me about the 'sweet' guitar he bought at a garage sale the day before. the entire procedure took less than 25 minutes, and I was soon on my way, limping into the sunset.

that leaves me here. I'm drowsy as fuck from the pain killers, but if I go to bed I'll screw my sleep scedule for sure. so instead I'm posting here and checking out Snopes, hoping something cool will happen. ahh, goodtimes.
